Prof. Anirudh Pradan currently visiting INSPEM will begin some introductory lectures on tools for general relativity today, Monday June 14, 2010 at Bilik Seminar Al-Khawarizmi, Maths Bldg, The programme should start at 9am. For details of his lectures (and subsequent one), please see below.
Lecture I: Some preliminaries, Transformation of coordinates, Determinant and its differentiations, Four vectors (World vectors), Tensor Algebra-transformations of contravariant and covariant vectors, Some examples/problems with their solutions.
Lecture II: Tensor Algebra-Addition & Subtraction of Tensors, Multiplication of Tensors, Outer & Inner Product, Contraction. Some examples and problems with their solutions.
Lecture III: Symmetric & antisymmetric tensors Quotient law, Reciprocal symmetric tensor, Invariant, Relative scalars, Transformation, group property - Problems/examples and their solutions.
Lecture IV: Riemmanian Metric, Fundamental tensors, Length of curve, Associated vectors, Scalar product of two vectors, Hypersurface, Homogeneous space, Euclidean space and their properties, Examples/problems on these topics with their solutions.
Lecture V: Spherical coordinates, cylindrical coordinates & determination of line-elements, Problems/Examples and their solutions.
Lecture VI: Tensor Calculus - Christoffel symbols, Some theorems, Laws of transformations, Covariant Derivative of covariant and contravariant vectors, Covariant derivative of scalars, Geodesic, Null Geodesic, Some problems based on these topics with their solution.
